Septum Ornaments

Today, septum ornaments are widely recognized as a signal to other Queers within the Queer community. While it is not true that every septum ring means someone is gay, it a shared visual indicator of Queerness within the community. The practice of body modification for Queer ritual self-adornment does not end with the septum either. Many types of piercings, tattoos, and fashion function as self- affirmations, flagging, and empowerment of Queer identifiers. Many forms of these body modifications and chosen adornments function to disrupt hetero-patriarchal ideals and assert Queerness.
